Monday 3 August 2026: July wrap-up!

Well, July went by in a bit of a flash, didn’t it?

We’re having so much work done in the house I had to push a lot back to August and beyond, including the client work and the republishing work. Most of my time has been seeing to workmen, or making endless cups of tea or drinks of water, or keeping an eye on the dog and making sure gates aren’t being left open for him to escape out of.

It’s been far too hot to walk the dog during the day, so I’ve been saving those for the evenings when it’s been cooler and when we can all go together.

We didn’t get our internet connected until the very last week of the month, and that pushed me back on a few jobs too.

I managed to start one of the client jobs but it isn’t finished yet. Oh, and I managed to write a brand-new short story, pretty much by the seat of my pants, and get it submitted to an open call for submissions.

I’ve also been keeping an eye out for open calls to share with my writer friends and colleagues who have been affected by the ever-reducing market in the UK and the latest recent news that one of the previously best markets has added AI-generated stories to its content.

***soapbox alert***
There *are* other submission opportunities, just like there *are* other retailers of books, and, more often than not, the pay and terms are way better than what we’ve been getting in the UK market of late. It doesn’t take a lot to shift focus and aim at these instead, and at least we keep our copyright and can earn from the stories we write again and again and again, if we can only be bothered.
***end of soapbox alert***
