Friday 8 May 2026: Unexpected road works

Friday already! In only a few weeks, the nights will start drawing in again. It’s madness how fast the years go by these days…

The poet came home from work on Wednesday and had to get ready to go straight out again. It was the first rehearsal for the Monkey Dust farewell gig, and it reminded him of just one of the reasons he was packing it all in: giving up evenings at home.

I finished what I was doing and called it a day. When I read through yesterday’s blog post I thought it finished a bit abruptly and was convinced I’d missed a bit off. So the first job yesterday morning was to check the Scrivener file, but that finished abruptly too. My brain must have thought I’d tied it all of a bit better than I actually had.

The poet was up and out early and that meant the dog didn’t settle properly after he’d gone, so I was up half an hour before my alarm too. The poet called me not long after I’d set off to let me know our road was closed and he’d had to go around a back way, did I know anything about it…I knew there had been Road Closed signs since about Monday, but nobody seemed to know why.

I enjoyed a leisurely dirty cuppa, browsed social media, posted a query in the FB group about the road closure, and read quite a lot of my book before it was time to get dressed and get to work. Someone had responded that it looked like they were resurfacing the main road through the village, so instead of doing the housework first, the dog had an early walk. And we did the full mile instead of the 10-minute quickie.

Sure enough, strips of the road had been eaten off and it looked like they were repairing potholes. By the time I got back home, more people had responded to my query. They were mending the potholes yesterday and coming back to resurface the roads. But nobody had received any kind of warning and there are a lot of residences and a few business along the stretch that was closed, plus the public bus service hadn’t been along at all this week. How were those people supposed to get to work?

Very shambolic.

When I got back I did a bit of housework before going back into the office.

Son #2 was coming to collect some mail and a book of tickets for the Monkey Dust farewell gig in June and I had to send him alternative directions. But he made it, stopped for a very quick chat, and was off back to work again. The dog was very pleased to see him, but a lot calmer than he was the last time someone came to the house. He must be getting better.

It was past my midday breakfast time by now, so that’s what I did next. Then I came back to work and started today’s blog post. I received an acknowledgment that my workshop assignment had landed safely. And then I started the new proofreading job…

Or I printed it off at least. I remembered I’d had the author’s responses to the client edit back on Monday and I decided to apply those and get that file sent to the client for setting. So that’s what I did for the rest of the day.

Most of today is given over to the proofreading job I printed off. But all being well, I’ll have another early Friday finish.

We have no plans yet for the weekend, but whatever you’re doing, I hope it’s a good one!

  1. I’m so sick and tired of all these construction people just swanning around doing whatever they want with no communication. It takes 5 minutes to post something on the city’s website, and no one can ever be bothered.

I hope you have a great weekend. We had another hard frost. I’m ready for a real spring!

    1. The lack of communication has got everyone annoyed here, it seems, and with good reason. First anyone knew of it was when their bus didn’t turn up to take them to work!

      Thank you! You too.
