Monday 24 November 2025: It rained. A lot.

We had a very good night on Thursday. Dogs were fed at about 10:30pm, which meant they both slept right through. Yay! They were up with the poet, who fed them, and then they came back to bed for half an hour while the poet attended a meeting.

When I got up, I had my dirty cuppa while I did some research. And when I was dressed, I fed the birds, played with the dogs in the garden for a bit, put some washing through, and folded some washing up.

At my desk, the very first thing I did was spend time on the new edit, the one I promised the author I was starting on Tuesday. I did my basic formatting (removing double spaces, setting the language to UK English, changing hyphens to en-dashes where applicable, deleting superfluous carriage returns, etc.), and printed it off for the first hard-copy edit. When I next look at this on screen, I’ll track changes and make the amendments.

I couldn’t get the page numbering to work in LibreOffice Writer. It only printed on the first page, and when I checked the file, it only appeared on the first page too. So I had to do some more research to find out what I’m doing wrong. It appears it was taking the first page as a title page or separate section. This didn’t help this time, but hopefully I’ll remember it for the next job on the pile.

The client paid me for the editing job I finished about 4 weeks ago. I have to do the author responses on that and then I can send it to the designer. I’ll do that next.

Feeling very smug because I’d already scheduled Friday’s blog post, I started today’s…and then didn’t get back to it for the rest of the day. That’s all right, thought I. I’ll do it at the weekend…And then I didn’t log on once at the weekend, which is the way it should be.

But, back to Friday…The only thing I did for the rest of the day was that editing job. I worked at it solid for the entire day. I didn’t think it would take the rest of the day to finish it, but then the notes section was just all over the place with loads of things I’d missed in the hard copy edit. So I had to do a screen edit on those.

I’d say that probably about 85% of the notes were incorrect or incomplete or inconsistent. And when there are more than 300 notes, that’s a BIG job. BUT…I did it. And at 7:30pm I sent the clean file back to the author along with 4 queries I’d like him to address. He did reply on Friday evening to say he’d make it a priority. But I’d already logged off and closed down by then.

As I’m doing today’s post halfway through today (it’s almost time for our midday breakfast), I may as well do a quick round up of the weekend.

We didn’t do a thing.

It poured and poured with rain, so we couldn’t take the puppy on his first walk. We couldn’t do anything in the garden, other than put raincoats on while we played with them. And the poet stayed home while I went and did the weekly shop. We didn’t do any baking, because I cheated and bought cakes from the bakery. And we didn’t visit anyone.

We did, however, nip out in the car for a quick ride, with the dogs. And I stayed with them (it was still banging down) while the poet ran 2 errands. Then we came home, dried off, and put the shutters up for the rest of the weekend.

Today I want to invoice for the job I sent to the author on Friday and I want to make the author amendments to the job I finished before that one.
