Tuesday 25 August 2026: I baked!

Apple & Blackberry Crumble (© Diane Wordsworth)

We were up with the larks on Saturday because we had to get the dog to doggy daycare ahead of the daughter’s wedding. The dog sitter is only 15 minutes from our house, at the most, but it was 40 minutes ore more away from the wedding venue. We did wonder about having breakfast early, but decided we’d have it before we left for the day. Only by then, of course, we were in a rush. So we packed some breakfast bars instead and headed off.

Last time we took the dog to the dog sitter, and the time before, he was a bit reluctant to go in. This time he practically dragged the poet to the sitter’s front door.

We headed off to the wedding with plenty of time to spare, only to be confronted by a traffic jam on the motorway. It was moving, though, so that was something, and we made it with 5 minutes to spare. An hour later the poet was proud as punch to be walking his daughter down the aisle.

The weather was kind, after a couple of days of rain. It was warm with cloudy intervals. The photographs were taken and the meal was had, and we headed home to get changed for the evening do.

We weren’t staying for the duration as we had the dog to pick up, but we stayed long enough for the poet to have a dance with his daughter. His daughter’s friend tried to convince him to get up and sing with the band, but he didn’t really know anything well enough on the set list. Nevertheless, it was a good band and they sounded good.

We let the dog sitter know we were on our way and while the dog was very happy to see us, he cried all the way home, which was a bit worrying. As soon as he realised we were minutes away from the house, he perked up, which was good. We may have only been here for 3 months, 2 months if you count when we actually moved in, but he’s recognising the neighbourhood roads.

On Sunday we planned to do nothing all day, and while I walked the dog around the heath, the poet went and took his turn doing the shopping. When he got back, I finally got around to some baking. I made my signature fruit crumble, adding some blackberries to bulk out the cooking apples and making an oaty topping.

The poet, who if you remember was supposed to be RESTING, aside from going out and doing the shopping also carried a heavy mirror out to the garage to paint the frame, He cut and strimmed the grass in the back. He scarified the grass in the front, which took AGES – and then he remembered the electric scarifier in the shed that we inherited when we moved here…

He modified a large sheet of plywood that’s blocking off a part of the garden we still want to keep the dog out of (too much coal dust he kept bringing into the house on his feet), so we can’t actually see it from the house. And he moved some heavy plant pots before bringing the mirror back into the house, which he struggled to do and when he asked me to help him to hang it again, requiring 4 screws, I told him to just prop it against the wall and SIT DOWN.

The mirror’s still propped against the wall but at least he didn’t give himself another relapse.

For tea we had a lovely gammon dinner with the crumble and Greek yoghurt for pudding.

On Monday, he finished his course of antibiotics (or antibacterials, we can’t make up our mind) and he felt well enough to go back to work. Saying that, we did struggle to get up but he didn’t have to be in the Midlands first thing and he was able to have an easy drive down.

I made a start on the housework by putting a washload through. We have rain forecast later this week, from tomorrow morning actually, I think, and I wanted to get some of it at least on the line.

My first job of the day was yesterday’s blog post. I republished the next book to be done. And I made a start on the covers for the next 6. Then I fell down a rabbit hole. A DRM rabbit hole on Facebook that took up most of the rest of the day. As it started to creep towards 4pm I had to step away from the rabbit hole and try and do some more work. But that’s when I noticed that some of the images I used on earlier covers of my books are no longer available on CanvaPro.

That meant a lot of time wasted looking for them in the first place, so I could get the credits right. It also meant a lot of time looking for replacements. I didn’t finish the covers work, so that means everything will be pushed along again. I did get the washing on the line, though.

On his way home the poet dropped into his most local site and picked up his new work wear. He’d ordered 5 polo shirts (short sleeved t-shirts with collars) and 5 crews. Only the polos were there, but at least it meant he could discard his old polos, which are all looking a bit old and scruffy now.

While he cooked tea and brought the washing in, I took the dog for a walk around the block. We had a cheese and mushroom crustless quiche with baked beans and chips (fries) followed by our second helping of fruit crumble.

Today I need to start catching up – story of my life at the moment!
