Thursday 19 February 2026: Tug of War Day

Apparently, it’s Tug of War Day today. I can’t remember the last time I participated in a proper tug of war, or even watched one in action.

Saying that, I do sometimes feel as though I’m having a mental tug of war, either with one or both of the dogs, or with my own self, wrenching work out when it’s scheduled in, and sometimes when it isn’t. A war of the wits, perhaps. I didn’t feel like I was having a tug of war yesterday, though. The dogs were well behaved, all day. The roofer came and did some more work for a couple of hours. We had pancakes for tea. And I got on with some work…

Although it was still a bit of a wrench to get going.

I’d had a much better night’s sleep and didn’t want to get up. But the poet was getting up with me so he could go to one of his sites that’s just about an hour away and the least I could do was get up with him.

There wasn’t any point in me starting anything until the roofer was here. His mother died at the weekend. I think she’d been poorly as he’d been to and from the hospital with her and that, coupled with the atrocious weather we’ve been having, kept him away from our roof.

Talking about the weather, it did stop raining on Tuesday. And the sun came out. It was bitter cold, but it was dry and sunny. Next door even had washing on the line. (Steady on, missus – it wasn’t that warm!) It was cold and dry on Wednesday too, with a bit of a breeze. No sunshine, a lot of cloud, and a warning that snow was on the way. I immediately went to my weather page only to see that at best we might get a bit of sleet. As usual, we’re right on the edge of the extreme weather that’s coming in.

Once I made it to my desk, the first job was yesterday’s blog post. I’d been so out of sorts the day before, I hadn’t even started it, let along posted it. So I did that first and then started today’s.

I moved on to the Patreon/Medium work and the ‘take one idea’ of the premium writing prompts articles for February. I’d already written this out and left it to cool, so all I had to do was give it a quick proofread, choose the image, and post it. It’s already live on Patreon but it was still pending review on Medium. I made the Patreon graphic for Instagram and shared that one there, on BlueSky and on Facebook.

Final job of the day was the client proofread. I cleared 31 pages, of 102, so that wasn’t bad for a first session.

Jobs I didn’t do were write a short story and Week 3 of the depth in action workshop. I decided to do the paid work first and get it out of the work so I could do the rest of my own work with a clear conscience.

Today will be more proofreading, I have a short story to revise, and I want to do some dates work for the March Patreon article. If I clear all of that, I’ll catch up on the workshop and maybe write one of the short stories I haven’t written this week.

This post appears on Words Worth Writing, Medium and Patreon.
