This story is Vanessa’s backstory, Stevie Beck’s antagonist in the Horvale cosy mysteries.
The town of Horton Magna, where the series is mainly set, is filled with damaged people living alternative lives to the lives they left behind elsewhere. Many have been given new identities. They may be in witness protection, or just in hiding.
Vanessa’s identity is her real identity, because she grew up in Horton Magna. Nevertheless, she’s still one of life’s damaged people.
