Thursday 26 June 2025: Managed some writing

Wednesday dawned and the first job of the day, after all the usual household stuff, was Week 2 of the previous start-date’s 50 crime mystery prompts workshop, which I was watching out of interest, to see how much it differed from the 50 murder mystery prompts workshop, and not taking any notes.

Well, they are quite different.

I learned, for example, the difference between crime mysteries and murder mysteries. And the assignments are different too. I’m officially starting this workshop this week, when I’ll take notes and do the assignments.

I noticed, when loading the blog via DuckDuckGo that it’s bringing the formatting with it again. It had stopped doing this in Firefox, so I’d started to write titles in capital. But when I noticed it was working in DDG, I switched back again. Just in case anyone noticed I’d gone back to italics again…How curious, though.

As some things aren’t working properly in DDG, such as Facebook, I’m using Firefox for that, but I’m using DDG for everything else. I can’t use Fluff Busting Purity for FB in DDG (when I can get onto FB), but I thought I didn’t need to, to hide ads. But ads are creeping in on DDG, so FB is foiling them somehow. And, of course, I can hide things in FB Purity, such as specific words or stories or market place, etc, and I can’t on DDG. So I’m using Firefox for Facebook.

Facebook broke on Firefox too, but since I reported it (crosses fingers), it’s been working again. Slow, but working. So I tried reporting it to DDG.

I managed to get into a discussion on Facebook regarding ISBNs, and ended up convincing someone to return to Draft2Digital for selected works. She had a couple of D2D questions, which she asked privately. I found out what she needed and ended up almost falling down a YouTube rabbit hole myself. Fortunately, I spotted it and dragged myself back to the land of the living.

I watched the third and final week for the 50 MURDER mystery prompts workshop, made a note of the assignment, which is 3,000 to 7,000 words by midnight on Sunday. (Gulp!) As it was Wednesday by then, and as I knew I’d have another story to write for the 50 CRIME mystery prompts workshop, I had to pull my finger out.

BUT…I also had existing work to be getting on with. And with a gig on Saturday and a family event on Sunday, I can’t borrow as much time from the weekend as I can when I need to. It’s possible that the CRIME story may get passed over, but we shall see.

Next up, End of the Rainbow, for the great novella challenge. The deadline for which is midnight on Monday. I did one Pomodoro for this, just so I could say I’d touched it.

I nipped onto DDG to see if FB was working. It took its time, but yes, it came up eventually. So maybe reporting these things is the way forward. While I was online, I found out that our mobile phone network has been down all day. For everyone. The broadband hasn’t been great either, but that’s a different supplier.

Then it was back to the workshops, and this time I watched Week 1 of the 50 CRIME mystery prompts workshop proper, making those notes as I went along. Once the workshops for the week were finished, I started to brainstorm for the first assignment. The brainstorming doubled up for the third assignment on the other mystery prompts course too, so I managed to kill 2 birds. Well, not literally…

At least I got some writing work done.
