Going fishing

Thursday 12 August 2021

Thursday disappeared down another rabbit hole and I didn’t get a lot done, quite frankly. In fact, I don’t think I did a single thing. I was okay with it, though, because, if you remember, I’ve built in all of this wiggle room.

However, I don’t really want to keep pushing things along just because I’ve got wiggle room. It defeats the object a bit. Fortunately, the poet has come to the rescue. Unfortunately, it might involve working at the weekend.

I was looking forward to having this coming weekend off, as it’s the first one I don’t have to work in ages. But the poet was invited to take part in a fishing match tomorrow, and he was umming and ahhing about going.

On the one hand, he really wanted to go because (a) it’s the first match he’ll have been to in about a year, (b) because they asked him, and (c) because he really enjoys it.

But Monkey Dust also had a gig booked in and we generally keep those days free in case the unexpected happens and he’s delayed.

Unfortunately, the news came in very early on Thursday morning that the band’s lead guitarist has Covid. (He’s in the age group that’s getting it now, but they’re generally recovering from it after about a fortnight.) So the gig was cancelled.

Fortunately, the venue found a replacement band within a few hours. And we hope the guitarist has a speedy recovery. But it also means that the poet now doesn’t have to rush back. So, he’s going fishing.

Oh, and we both had a lateral flow test to make sure we were both negative as we’d been with the band last Friday. (We were.) (Both negative.) (But the poet is tested every morning anyway, before he goes into the factory.)

Sometimes I’ll go fishing with him and sit on the bank reading, or take the dog for a walk. When it’s close enough, I’ll drive up during the day, and take the dog. But for a match, he has to concentrate and so do the other anglers. So I stay away.

(Disclaimer: He doesn’t fish from a boat, I just like the picture.) (You almost got a puffin, because I like those too.)

Now then. In an ideal world, I’d probably choose to do my own work on an unexpected Saturday, and I’m having a bit of a dilemma.

  • Do I do my own work and lose the wiggle room?
  • Do I do client work so that I keep on schedule?
  • Do I just do whatever the hell I like?
  • Or, do I just have the day off?

Decisions, decisions. What would you do?

I’ll let you know how it panned out on Monday. Have a great weekend!
