Time to pull my socks up

The time has come, the walrus said, to pull my socks up. Okay, the walrus didn’t actually say that. I did. But it’s true. It’s now time to properly stop faffing and to properly start working again.

And when I say working, I mean writing. I already do enough work. Which, of course, is a great place to be. But you know what I mean.

I’ve been in contact with one of my favourite short fiction markets to see if I could still be reassigned a new editor as my old editor retired a couple of years ago.

When I realised just how long ago that was, and equally how long ago I’d last had a sale there, I did think I’d have to go back to the slush pile system.

However, the good news is that one of the fiction editors is happy to add me to her gang after all, and she also just happens to be in charge of pocket novels …

When I say ‘in charge of’ … well, you know what I mean there too.

This, of course, fits in very nicely with my new plan to start writing and submitting short fiction again. And as a result of my date work, I have a few themes to choose from that will also hopefully fit in with the magazine’s autumn schedule.

I’ve been studying their latest requirements over the past couple of weeks and I’ve been reading some of their most recent issues on Readly. I’m also looking at their specials and their longer pocket novels.

I’m going to start with short stories, to see how we get along, and then hopefully gradually build up to the longer material.

There are a couple of ideas already percolating in the back of my mind, and I’ll be doodling in between finishing my current work commitments.

I’d best get on with finishing that other work.
