Wednesday Writing Prompts

With the new regime, I don’t have a lot of time to go into detail, but I think you have the gist of things by now. Simply choose one of the topics, and then brainstorm. Fiction and non-fiction; topical and evergreen.

First wireless telegraph

One hundred and twenty-five years ago next year, on 14 May 1897, Marconi sent the first ever communication by wireless telegraph.

What do we know about Marconi? Where was he born? Where did he live? When did he die? What else did he do? How did he get into communications?

How have tele-communications progressed since then? Can you compare sending instant messages today with sending a telegraph in those days?

You can research and write a topical article, using this date as your hook. Or you can set a story, long or short, within the world of communications.

Or you can write a ranty letter, or a praising letter, to your local newspaper, website, social media page, whatever, about your current communications experience.

How about a poem with the rhythm of a telegraph?

Cats

Forty years ago this year, on 11 May 1981, Cats premiered.

Where did it premier? How long did it run for? Who have been the stars of Cats over the years? What else had Andrew Lloyd Webber written? What inspired him to write musicals in the first place?

My school presented a performance of The Power Station Gang only two years before Cats premiered. It too was a musical, it was about cats, and it was based on the 1970 book The Hunting of Wilberforce Pike. And it was written by three of our teachers.

What memories (excuse the pun) does the show dredge up for you? Could you write a story that features cats?

Ascension Day/Eid al-Fitr

This Thursday, 13 May (tomorrow) is Ascension Day. From tonight, it is also Eid al-Fitr. Both happen every year, but the date is moveable, so do your research for next year.

With the two falling on the same date, this is an ideal opportunity to write a cross- or multi-faith story or article.

What can you find out about Ascension Day? What is Eid al-Fitr?

Over to you…

… and don’t forget to come back and let me know if and what you did, and how it fared.
