Wednesday Writing Prompts

With the new regime, I don’t have a lot of time to go into detail, but I think you have the gist of things by now. Simply choose one of the topics, and then brainstorm. Fiction and non-fiction; topical and evergreen.

May Day

This coming Saturday is 1 May. Historically, that’s May Day, and more recently it’s become Labour Day. It’s also our wedding anniversary!

What is it called where you live? Do you have a bank holiday? Should it be a bank holiday? Should it be celebrated as the first day of May or should it be a celebration of our labour?

The actual date, 1 May, comes around every year, so that makes it an evergreen. However, if you have a public holiday for that day, which is usually a Monday in the UK, then that date will move, and it could land as late as 7 May. So do your research in advance.

Think of everything that happens in May. Think of all the traditional fertility festivals. Think of what May usually heralds, in the natural world too.

Write anything you like set against this annual event.

Ulysses S Grant

Two hundred years ago next year, on 27 April 1822, Ulysses S Grant was born.

What do we know about Ulysses Grant? Where was he born? Where did he die? How old was he when he died? What is he famous for? Are there other military commanders who can be added to a feature about Grant? Are there any other presidents that are on a par with him?

What else can you find out about the man, his politics, his military career, his private life? Can he feature in a historical story? Or can a character be named after him?

Betty Boothroyd

Keeping a bit of a balance in the political personalities this time, we have Betty Boothroyd, who was the MP for West Bromwich. Yet she was born in Dewsbury in West Yorkshire.

Thirty years ago next year, on 27 April 1992, Betty Boothroyd became the first ever female speaker in the House of Commons. What does that inspire you to write about?

The baroness has also recently been in the news for downsizing at the grand age of 91. And last year she was investigated for missing a sexual harassment training course. (She was 90, she had recently had heart surgery, AND we were at the start of an international pandemic!)

Plenty to start you off there.

Over to you…

… and don’t forget to come back and let me know if and what you did, and how it fared.
