NaNoWriMo 2018 – day 2

Day 2 and I’m still planning a bit while writing a bit, although my word-count did go up quite considerably this morning.

NaNoWriMo is my first “job” of the day. Whether I’m planning or writing, it’s the first thing to get my attention, after about an hour of admin/household stuff.

The day before yesterday I delivered a proofreading job. They were so happy with the work, the following day they asked if I could do another 13,000 words by the end of the day (yesterday) … but they didn’t ask this until yesterday lunchtime.

However, it’s a new client, and so I cleared some other work, and then got on with this new material. I worked until about 8pm, but I delivered it and they acknowledged safe receipt at 9pm.

I don’t often work of an evening, and even less of a weekend, apart from my own stuff. But I didn’t want to turn them away. However, I’ve told them I’m not available today.

I’m also in the middle of a rush job for lovely-already-client, and there’s another rush job from them chomping at my heels. So my mornings are currently filled with Nano, admin and household work, and my afternoons are filled with client work.

The companion writer’s guide I’m using alongside this year’s NaNo starts with storylines and world building. Because I’m doing a new treatment for my story, I have two worlds that are sort-of running parallel. Not as in a parallel universe or anything as clever as that, but as in one storyline takes place in 1974 and the other takes place in 1999, 25 years later.

This means I have two lots of everything: two storylines, two lots of characters, two worlds, and so on.

At the moment I’m working on the “current” or “1999” world. I’m trying to work out how my two 1999 characters get involved with the 1974 storyline, and why they’d even want to. I’m also trying to make it important for them to do so. Otherwise, I don’t really have a proper story.

But … I’m doing okay. I think.

The companion writer’s guide gives us 5 days off, so that we write a 50,000-word novel in 25 days rather than 30 (or 20 days if you’re also doing the planning work as part of the total 30 days). My first day off was going to be this coming Sunday. But as the weather looks like it’s going to be better tomorrow, I think I’m taking Saturday off instead.

However, I’ll still work on the planning and prep work. I just won’t add anything major to the word-count.

Have a great weekend.
